John R. Horton studied microbiology at Texas A&M University where he received his M.S.degree. From there he went to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where his initial work focused on the molecular pathogenesis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, the causative agent of atypical pneumonia in humans. Additional studies were done on Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma incognitans. John extended his work to the etiological agent of syphilis in humans and also worked in a DNA sequencing core facility. After that he worked at North Carolina State University on various human and veterinary pathogens including Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Bordetella avium, and Listeria monocytogenes. He is currently working with Ron Cannon and Ray Tennant on the molecular transporter ABCA13.
