Research Summary

Susan Elmore, M.S., D.V.M, D.A.B.T, D.A.C.V.P., is a veterinary medical officer and staff scientist in the NTP Pathology Group. She is a board certified toxicologist, board certified pathologist, and is a fellow of the International Academy of Toxicologic Pathology. She provides technical expertise for the NTP Pathology Support Contract, and other NTP contracts. Additionally, Elmore provides pathology oversight and preparation of the technical reports for various NTP studies including Beta Picoline, Tetrabromobisphenol A, Garcinia Cambogia, Chitosan, Tetrabromobisphenol A and O-Chloropyridine. Elmore also provides pathology oversight for various NTP Immunotox studies including Dibenzanthracene, Gum Guggul Extract, Lovastatin, Nelfinavir Mesylate, Resveratrol, TCAB and 2,3-Butanedione.

Her current focus is on the preparation of mouse embryo histology atlases. Each organ system will be published separately in the Toxicologic Pathology Journal. The heart and hepatobiliary atlases are completed and the CNS atlas and urinary system atlas are currently in preparation. Other areas of expertise include immunopathology and renal pathology. Elmore also organizes and chairs the NTP Satellite Symposium each year.

Biography

Elmore joined the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Branch’s (CMPB) staff in January 2006 as Veterinary Medical Officer and Staff Scientist. She received her B.S. degree in genetics with a minor in biotechnology from NCSU in 1987. She worked as a Research Associate in the lab of Dr. Clyde Hutchison in the University of North Carolina Microbiology/Immunology Department from 1987-1997. After graduating from veterinary school at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2001, she began her residency in veterinary anatomic pathology, also at NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2003 she completed her residency and accepted a position as an Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) fellow at NIEHS in the CMPB/NTP Toxicologic Pathology Training Program. She received her board certifications from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2004 and from the American Board of Toxicology in 2010 and was elected a fellow in the International Academy of Toxicologic Pathology in 2011.
