Research Summary

Jane Hoppin, Sc.D., is an environmental epidemiologist interested in developing and improving exposure assessment methods for common environmental contaminants and applying these in epidemiology studies. Hoppin's research focuses on the health effects of pesticides and phthalates, common environmental contaminants.

 

Since joining NIEHS in 1999, Hoppin has been an integral part of the Agricultural Health Study, a large cohort study of approximately 60,000 farmers and their families in North Carolina and Iowa. She is one of the co-principal investigators for the study being conducted in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Her research interests in the cohort have focused on two areas, respiratory health and exposure assessment. Hoppin has taken the lead on respiratory analyses in the cohort, focusing on respiratory symptoms in applicators and respiratory disease among farmers and their wives. Using the power of this large cohort, researchers have been able to identify individual pesticides associated with respiratory symptoms as well as identify diesel exhaust exposure as a potential respiratory hazard among farmers.

 

Hoppin continues to assess factors influencing respiratory health in the cohort and is planning a longitudinal study of lung function to obtain objective measures of respiratory outcomes. She is also a co-investigator, providing exposure assessment expertise, on the Farming and Movement Evaluation (FAME) study, a nested case-control study of Parkinson’s disease in the Agricultural Health Study.

 

Phthalates are commonly used as plasticizers and in cosmetics. Human exposure to phthalates is widespread, and yet little is known about their human health consequences. Some phthalate esters act as endocrine disruptors in animals. Hoppin has focused on understanding patterns of phthalate exposure and assessing the respiratory consequences of these exposures.

    The Norwegian Mother & Child Cohort Study or MoBa is an ongoing long-term prospective cohort study of 100,000 pregnant women and their babies. In collaboration with the Norwegian National Public Health Institute, NIEHS is supporting the collection of additional biologic specimens from the pregnant women.

  • Farming and Movement Evaluation (FAME) Study

The study also examines the connection between the illness and lifestyle factors, skin melanin and polymorphisms in genes involved in xenobiotic metabolism, dopaminergic neurotransmission or xenobiotic-specific membrane transport.

  • AHS Neurobehavioral Study
    This is an extramurally-funded study (Frederic Gerr, Ph.D., principal investigator, University of Iowa) in collaboration with investigators from AHS. Based on lifetime pesticide use history, a subset of 800 cohort participants will receive neurobehavioral tests and provide biological samples to evaluate whether long-term, low-level exposures to pesticides have neurological consequences.
