NTP Toxicology Branch(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/tob/staff.cfm) Research Fellow Mamta Behl, Ph.D.(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/tob/behl/index.cfm), received a $1000 travel award from the Society of Toxicologic Pathology to attend the annual meeting(http://www.toxpath.org/AM2011/)
held June 19-23 in Denver.
Behl presented a poster on NTP research on "Peripheral Neuropathy in Rats Exposed to Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) Trimer." SAN Trimer is a by-product of the production of acrylonitrile styrene plastics and is created in specific manufacturing processes for polymers of acrylonitrile and styrene. NTP conducted two-year chronic feeding studies exposing rats to SAN Trimer in a perinatal-postnatal exposure design. Findings from the NTP studies on SAN Trimer were peer-reviewed at a public meeting Jan. 26 (see story(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/newsletter/2011/march/science-peer/) and NTP peer review(http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/36144)).
Other members of the research team included lead NTP toxicologist Rajendra Chhabra, Ph.D.; NIEHS biostatistician Grace Kissling, Ph.D.(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/bb/staff/kissling/index.cfm); lead NTP pathologist Susan Elmore, D.V.M.(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lep/ntp-path/staff/elmore.cfm); former NTP Research Fellow Deepa Rao, BVSc, Ph.D.(http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lep/ntp-path/staff/rao.cfm), now of Integrated Laboratory Systems, Inc.; James Morrison, D.V.M. of Charles River Laboratories, Pathology Associates; and Amy Brix, D.V.M, Ph.D., of Experimental Pathology Laboratories. Chhabra is Behl's current mentor.
