The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Scientific Director for its Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The Scientific Director is a vital part of the senior leadership team and serves as the principal advisor to the NIEHS Director on biomedical and scientific affairs involving the intramural research program. The NIEHS supports and conducts research to understand biological and chemical processes and the contribution of environmental agents to human disease and dysfunction, including mechanisms of environmentally associated diseases (www.niehs.nih.gov). This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an extremely capable leader to plan and oversee basic and applied research programs, evaluate research efforts, establish program priorities, allocate resources, direct training of pre-and post-doctoral fellows, collaborate with other NIH programs, foster interdisciplinary synergistic biomedical research, and advise the NIEHS Director and senior staff on the DIR and areas of science of interest to the Institute. The DIR is organized into four scientific programs including 12 laboratories and branches conducting laboratory, clinical, and population-based research. The Intramural Division has a staff of approximately 800 employees with an annual budget of approximately $110M.

The NIEHS seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse research program. Applicants must have a MD, PhD or equivalent degree and should have demonstrated scientific leadership and extensive scientific accomplishments including a research program of national and international standing in an area relevant to environmental health. Salary is commensurate with level of experience and accomplishments.
