What is the NIEHS Biomedical Career Fair?

The annual NIEHS Biomedical Career Fair, now in its 16th year, is one of the largest assemblies of biomedical organizations and young scientists in Research Triangle Park, NC. Targeting postdoctoral fellows and advanced graduate students, the Career Fair provides these young scientists an opportunity to explore a myriad of fields and create a contact network as they plan for their future careers in the biomedical sciences.

CV/Resume Reviewers

We are glad to announce that we have increased the popular one-on-one CV and Résumé consultation sessions to over 150 individual appointments this year!
CV and Résumé consultations will be conducted by appointment throughout the day. They will take place in the cafeteria. There will be four sessions broken up into 20-minute time slots.

  • Session I – 10:20-11:40 AM
  • Session II – 1:00-1:40 PM
  • Session III – 1:45-2:45 PM
  • Session IV – 4:00-5:00 PM

Sign-up will begin when registration opens at 7:45 AM. Appointments fill quickly so be sure to arrive early to secure your preferred slot. Please note that not every reviewer is available for every session.

Ann Beaulieu, Ph.D.

After receiving a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry, Ann began her career in Rohm and Haas’ Agriculture business as a Discovery chemist. After many internal transfers, today she is the Global Regulatory Director for a small agricultural subsidiary of Dow AgroSciences as well as the R&D Chemistry Leader. In these dual roles, she is responsible for developing the registration strategies as well as compiling, submitting and managing dossiers through agencies around the world. As R&D leader, she oversees the discovery and formulations chemistry teams, responsible for new product development. In the intervening years, Ann had multiple R&D manager positions of increasing responsibility in different businesses, including, adhesives, water purification and agricultural manufacturing. In addition to R&D roles, Ann had two development assignments, one in human resources and one in procurement. After graduate school, Ann expanded her training by attending business programs for technologists at U of Penn Wharton and the Northwestern Kellogg schools of business.

Prakash Bhave, Ph.D.

Prakash grew up in California, attended UC Berkeley for undergraduate studies and Caltech for graduate studies in environmental engineering with a focus on atmospheric pollutants. While completing his doctoral thesis, he was fortunate to land a permanent job in EPA’s Office of Research and Development where he has worked for the past 10 years. Prakash served as a staff scientist in the Atmospheric Modeling and Analysis Division (AMAD) for 8 years, a 15-month term as an Assistant Laboratory Director, and he is currently the Senior Science Advisor for AMAD. Prakash has served on several candidate selection committees, has written selection questions for a USAJOBS advertisement, and mentored several postdocs to find career research positions.

Amy Blackburn, M.S.Ed.

Amy Blackburn serves as the Senior Assistant Director for Graduate Students and is the liaison to the Gillings School of Global Public Health. When she's not on campus, she enjoys time in her garden or sailing on one of her boats. She was born and raised in the Chicago area and moved to North Carolina in 2001 to work in academic advising at Meredith College. She has over 20 years of experience in college student services roles with undergraduate and graduate students. She holds a M.S.Ed. in College Student Personnel Administration from Indiana University and a A.B. in Elementary Education from Washington University in St. Louis.

Melissa Bostrom, Ph.D.
Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Professional Development
Duke University
Melissa began her current position as Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Professional Development at Duke University in February 2013. In this role, she provides strategic direction and leadership for graduate student professional development, and her charge includes assembling a comprehensive program that addresses broad and discipline-specific professional development opportunities designed to help graduate students in diverse fields prepare for professional life beyond the graduate degree.
Most recently, Melissa served as Director of Graduate Academic and Professional Development in the Graduate School at NC State University, where she directed the Preparing the Professoriate program, the Graduate Leadership Development Series, the Certificate in Career Development, and the Professional Development Seminar series, all part of the Preparing Future Leaders professional development initiative. During her five years at NC State, these programs served over 6000 participants.
Melissa’s background includes experience teaching management and corporate communication at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, as well as teaching in the English department at NC State and UNC. She received her master’s and PhD in English from UNC, and her bachelor’s in English (writing) and psychology from Denison University. In addition to her current role at Duke, Melissa remains active as a consultant in business communication by teaching in the Executive MBA program at Kenan-Flagler, and as a personal development coach using the Human Patterns instrument.

Nisha Cavanaugh, Ph.D.
Director, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs

Nisha Cavanaugh received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2008 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. As a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), she was Chair of the NIEHS Trainees Assembly for over a year, served as a member of the 2010 NIEHS/EPA Biomedical Career Fair Committee, and wrote for the NIEHS Environmental Factor Newsletter. She continues to be an active member of the National Postdoctoral Association’s Advocacy Committee. In late 2012, Dr. Cavanaugh became the Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at North Carolina State University, where she coordinates professional development and training opportunities for more than 300 postdoctoral fellows and assists postdocs in their job searches. She was recently awarded an NIH Group Merit Award for her volunteer efforts with the NIEHS-Citizen Schools apprenticeship, "Health Lungs, Happy Living."

Tammy Collins, Ph.D.
Director, Office of Fellows' Career Development

Tammy Collins currently directs the activities of the Office of Fellows’ Career Development at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). In this role, she develops and organizes professional career development and scientific training opportunities for the postdoctoral community. She also provides individual CV/resume consultations and facilitates networking opportunities with area professionals. Aside from these responsibilities, she performs a range of additional duties including those in conflict resolution, policy implementation, strategic planning, and event planning. Her central mission is to assist others in finding their career path and to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to become successful and independent.
Prior to transitioning into her current role, Tammy received her B.S. in Chemistry from Appalachian State University, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University. After a brief postdoc at Duke University, she joined NIEHS as a postdoc in 2009 where she developed her passion for working in the scientific career development field.

Lori Conlan, Ph.D.

Lori M. Conlan is trained as a biochemist, receiving her B.S. in biochemistry from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics from Texas A&M University. She worked for several years as a postdoc at the Wadsworth Center, NYS Department of Health, before transitioning from the lab to focus on career issues for the next generation of scientists. Lori started as the director of the Science Alliance, an international career development program for graduate students and postdocs sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences. She now is at the NIH in the Office of Intramural Training & Education assisting the 4000 NIH postdocs in their personal career choices. Lori is the director of two offices, the Office of Postdoctoral Services and the NIH Career Services Center.

Dan Costa, Sc.D.
National Program Director for Air, Climate and Energy Research
US EPA
Dr. Costa is the National Program Director for the Air Climate & Energy Research Program in EPA. Dan earned his B.S. in Biology / Chemistry from Providence College, RI, an M.S. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers, an M.S. and Sc.D. in Physiology / Toxicology from the Harvard School of Public Health. He previously was Chief of the Pulmonary Toxicology Branch of EPA’s health laboratory for 18 years, where he led an active group investigating the health effects of ozone, PM as well as other air pollutants. He is a Diplomat and Past-President of the American Board of Toxicology (1994) and is Past-President of the Inhalation Specialty Section of the SOT (1996) from which he received the Career Achievement Award (2003). He has authored more than 160 refereed publications, 4 book editorships, and ~30 monographs. He continues his research through collaboration with Drs. Aimen Farraj and Mehdi Hazari on the role of lung derived neurogenic modulation of cardiac function in models of cardiopulmonary disease.

Ken Elstein, M.B.A.

After 18 years as a widely published bench scientist in cellular toxicology, Mr. Elstein obtained his MBA, and subsequently pursued a career in organizational improvement during which he become a certified facilitator, certified professional coach, and Distinguished Toastmaster. Since 2004, he has served as an Organizational Development Specialist for the EPA’s Office of Research and Development, providing coaching, training, consulting, conflict-management, and meeting design & facilitation services to help employees at all levels become more effective and influential. He has developed and conducted workshops and webinars on career development and successful interviewing techniques, and has coached numerous clients on these topics.

Erin Hopper, Ph.D.
Director, Training Initiatives in Biomedical and Biological Sciences

Erin Hopper, PhD is Director of Training Initiatives in Biomedical and Biological Sciences (TIBBS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In this role, she provides career awareness and professional development programming for graduate students in the life sciences. In addition to professional development services, Erin provides one-on-one career coaching sessions, CV and resume reviews, and consultations on job application materials. Erin is committed to educating students about the spectrum of career options available to scientists. She also provides academic coaching and support services to graduate students by acting as Assistant Director of Academic and Career Excellence (ACE).
Erin received her B.S. in chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went on to earn her PhD from Duke University under the supervision of Professor Michael C. Fitzgerald. While at Duke, she was active on the planning committee of Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), a role that sparked her passion for developing career awareness and professional development programming. She continued her involvement in education and training as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) by serving as chair of the NIEHS Trainees Assembly Steering Committee and by helping to organize the NIEHS Biomedical Career Fair. Erin is fully committed to informing students about their career options and helping them to gain the skills they need to be successful in the careers of their choice.

Diane Klotz, Ph.D.
Director, Office of Training & Academic Services
Sanford-Burnham Research Institute
Dr. Diane Klotz is Director of the Office of Training & Academic Services at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in San Diego, CA. In this position Diane oversees scientific career education and training programs for Sanford-Burnham’s trainees and scientific staff and provides training-related support to the Institute’s PIs and trainees. In addition to her program development role, Diane participates in Institute-wide efforts in strategic planning with respect to education and training initiatives, serves as an advisor to executive leadership on education and training issues, and collaborates with Institute leaders to develop training policies. Diane received her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Tulane University. As a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS, NIH), Diane’s research focused on cross-talk between steroid hormone receptor and growth-factor signaling pathways, primarily in the female reproductive tract. Outside the lab, Diane served as a member and chair of the NIEHS Trainees Assembly Steering Committee, was a member and chair of the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) policy committee, and she subsequently served as a member and chair of the NPA Board of Directors. She remains active with the NPA as a member of the Advisory Council. Prior to accepting her current position, Diane was the Director of the NIEHS Office of Fellows’ Career Development.

Alaina Levine
Career Consultant

Alaina G. Levine is a Contributor to National Geographic, science writer, science careers consultant, professional speaker and corporate comedian. Her new book on networking strategies for scientists and engineers will be published by Wiley in 2013/14. As President of Quantum Success Solutions, a career consulting enterprise with a focus on advancing the professional development expertise of scientists and engineers, she has been advising emerging and established scientists and engineers about their careers for over a decade, and has consulted with tens of thousands of early- and mid-career scientific and engineering professionals. The author of over 100 articles pertaining to science, science careers and business in such publications as Science, Nature, Smithsonian, Scientific American Online, IEEE Spectrum, New Scientist, and COSMOS, Levine was recently named a Contributor to National Geographic, where she writes and blogs for NatGeo’s website. She also pens the Profiles in Versatility career column for the American Physical Society's national publication, APS News. Previously, she directed the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in applied science and business programs and taught entrepreneurship to science and engineering graduate students at the University of Arizona (UA). She has given over 500 workshops and seminars around the country and in Europe. Levine holds degrees in mathematics and anthropology from the UA, studied abroad at the American University in Cairo as a DoD National Security Education Program/Boren Fellow, and pursued grant-funded research in cosmology and mathematics history. Recently, she was honored with a travel fellowship to cover the 62nd Lindau (Physics) Nobel Laureates Meeting in Lindau, Germany (which she used to cover the meeting for National Geographic and APS News), during which she broke the Higgs news for NatGeo. She also has been honored as a Logan Science Journalism Fellow at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, a Robert Bosch Stiftung Science Journalism Fellow, and an Institutes for Journalism & Natural Resources Fellow. In addition, Levine is an award-winning entrepreneur, and was named Tucson Leader of the Year, an honor previously bestowed upon former US Surgeon General Richard Carmona, and a Tucson 40 Under 40 Leader, an honor also bestowed upon former US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords the same year. Andrew Lindstrom, Ph.D.

Andrew B. Lindstrom is a scientist with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. He is currently conducting methods development research for the Exposure Measurements and Analysis Branch where his areas of expertise include: measurement of persistent perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), use of protein adducts as indicators of exposure to carcinogens, and analysis of exhaled alveolar breath to determine exposure and dose of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). He has considerable experience with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis to measure trace level contaminants in biological and environmental media.

Rachel Murrell, Ph.D.
Founder, Postdoctoral Association

Dr. Murrell received her Ph.D. in Environmental and Molecular Toxicology from North Carolina State University in 2008. Dr. Murrell’s thesis work was under the direction of Dr. James Gibson, Professor in Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at East Carolina University and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Murrell was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at East Carolina University under the direction of Dr. Phillip Pekala from 2010 to 2012. Dr. Murrell is the founder of the East Carolina University Postdoctoral Association and served as its chief elected officer from 2010 to 2012 and as liaison to the University Administration and to the Graduate School on postdoctoral scholar affairs. Dr. Murrell organized professional development events and a successful seminar series featuring invited speakers from industry, academia, government, and University research offices. During her tenure as Postdoctoral association president, Dr. Murrell served as a peer CV reviewer and has served as a CV reviewer at the NIEHS career fair since 2011. Dr. Murrell joined the Office of Technology Transfer at East Carolina University in May 2012.

Molini Patel, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Epidemiologist

Molini Patel is an epidemiologist in US EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment. Her work involves assessing the health effects of criteria air pollutants for the Integrated Science Assessments that serve as the scientific basis for the periodic review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Dr. Patel’s research examines the respiratory health effects of traffic-related air pollutants with a focus on exacerbation of asthma and development of asthma among children in urban environments.

Pat Phelps, Ph.D.
Education Specialist
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Patricia Phelps has career experience in academia, industry, the nonprofit industry and the federal government. Pat is currently an education specialist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History where she is assisting with the development of a new genomics exhibit.
Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Pat was the Deputy Director at the National Institutes of Health Graduate Partnerships Program where she developed innovative training programs and workshops in translational medicine, health disparities, professional development and career awareness for post baccalaureates, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
Prior to joining NIH, Pat was the Founding Director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s (UNC) School of Medicine Science, Training, and Diversity Office where she directed NIH funded training programs and professional and career development workshops for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. While at UNC, Pat founded North Carolina DNA Day and was inducted into the Frank Porter Graham Society.
Patricia received her PhD in Physiology at North Carolina State University. Prior to her academic career, Patricia was Senior Director of Global Product Development and Marketing for a biotechnology company As the Director of a department comprised of 23 scientists and engineers; Patricia gained extensive experience in developing collaborations and implementing strategic plans.

Amy Rawls, Ph.D.
Recruitment and Talent Development

Amy Rawls manages recruiting and talent development programs for American Journal Experts. She received her PhD in Molecular Genetics from Washington University in St. Louis and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Hematology, also at Wash U. For four years prior to joining the team at American Journal Experts, she was a contract-based scientific writer and editor.

Jen Richmond-Bryant, Ph.D.

Jen Richmond-Bryant has served as a Physical Scientist with the US EPA National Center for Environmental Assessment’s Atmospheric and Exposure Sciences team since 2008. Jen’s research and work on Integrated Science Assessments focuses largely on characterizing spatial variability in air pollutants for interpreting exposure data. Jen received her PhD from the UNC Environmental Sciences and Engineering program in 2003 and was an Assistant Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the City University of New York prior to taking her current government position. Jen served on faculty search committees at CUNY, has evaluated candidates interviewing with the EPA, and has overseen the acceptance process for ORISE post-graduate fellows at the EPA.

Denise Saunders, Ph.D.

Denise Saunders, PhD is a Career Counselor and Consultant for OITE at NIH. She provides career services to trainees at NIEHS in the RTP of North Carolina. She enjoys helping graduate students and early career professionals with their career planning and job search strategies. She is a Licensed Psychologist and National Certified Counselor. She holds an MS in Counseling and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Florida State University. In addition to her work with OITE she maintains a private practice in Chapel Hill, NC providing personal and career counseling and consultation to her clients. Prior to this she worked as a Counseling Psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of Virginia. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate students as an adjunct faculty member at several institutions and conducted presentations to student and professional groups nationally on a variety of career and professional development topics She served as the Assistant Director of the Florida State University Career Center while working on her doctoral degree. Dr. Saunders’ interests in practice and research have focused on the connections between career and mental health counseling.

Paul Schlosser, Ph.D.

Paul Schlosser received his BS (1982) and PhD (1988) from the University of Rochester, with a MASc (1984) from the University of Toronto, all in Chemical Engineering. After three years of postdoctoral research in Biochemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology, Paul joined the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (later the CIIT Centers for Health Research, now The Hamner Institutes) in 1991, conducting research on the modeling of xenobiotic metabolism and dosimetry, with applications in risk assessment. Paul then joined the U.S. EPA (2004), where he has primarily assisted in the evaluation and application of PBPK models in risk assessment, while also working to develop methods to quantify variability and uncertainty in PBPK model predictions. Paul has mentored several postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates and is still active in their career development.

Melanie Sinche, M.A., M.Ed., NCC

Melanie Sinche currently serves as Director of the FAS Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. In this role, she serves over 1,000 postdocs across a variety of disciplines, assisting with their career and professional development, and advises university administrators on issues pertaining to postdoctoral scholars. Melanie is also currently serving on a committee for the National Postdoctoral Association to improve data collection on postdoc services across the U.S. Melanie came to Harvard from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she served as a Consultant and Career Counselor. In this role, she assisted in the design, planning, and implementation of the first NIH-wide career center for intramural trainees. Her duties included defining services, recruiting staff, developing workshops, creating content for the career center website, and authoring a careers blog for scientists. Prior to this, Melanie served as the Founding Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has also delivered career development presentations and training sessions for universities, government agencies, professional associations, and non-profit organizations across the country. Melanie earned a Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Melanie completed a second Master’s degree in counseling at North Carolina State University and possesses the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential.

Molly Starback, M.S.L.S

Molly Starback, MSLS, is the founding Director of the Duke University Office of Postdoctoral Services. Opened in 2006, the office is the central resource for over 750 postdocs, serving both Campus and School of Medicine appointees. Molly oversees postdoctoral policy and procedure, serves as the career adviser for postdoctoral appointees, and provides training in professional development and research ethics. In 2006 Molly created Postdoctoberfest, a yearly appreciation event at which awards are presented to the Outstanding Postdoc and Outstanding Postdoc Mentor at Duke. She also established annual awards for postdoctoral professional development and helped create the Provost's Postdoctoral Scholars for Diversity Program. In addition to working with postdocs, Molly is an academic adviser for first- and second-year undergraduates at Duke. She is a member of the AAMC GREAT Group Postdoctorate Leaders Section Steering Committee and the Graduate Career Consortium, and has served as a member of the National Postdoctoral Association Membership Committee and Website Taskforce. In 2008 Molly received the Duke Meritorious Service Presidential Award in recognition of her work on behalf of Duke postdocs.
